Picasso appreciation

Posted by Julene on July 12th, 2010

A portrait of Pablo Picasso with one of his paintings as the background? This tattoo is taking “art appreciation” to a whole new level.

Tattoo by: Khan in Sapporo, Japan.

Can’t wait for the photo realism trend to die. Sure it’s technically impressive, but they look like shit years down the road.
They’re like the Steve Vai of tattoos – laden with skill and virtuosity, but you look back with the benefit of hindsight and think ‘What the fuck were we thinking?’. At the end of the day, Malcolm Young sounds SOOOO much better.

I’d be investing in laser removal studios if I had the money, ’cause my bet is a LOAD of this shit is getting taken off in 3-5 years.

    Dear unidentified Aussie,

Sorry you weren’t a fan – those are some strong words you’ve used there. Very interesting, I’m curious what other readers will say in response…

Nothing ever goes away. I thought tribal and nautical stars would dissapear. Hell – dudes are still asking for hot stuff devils. They said the same shit about black and grey tattoos… “it won’t last – it’ll die out eventually”. Everything we see tattooed won’t ever go away. Customers will always require them, whether you like it or not.

    Daft old man,

What a shame that your own opinions of what makes a good tattoo can cloud over you recognising how much time and skill has went into a wonderful piece of art.

“how much time and skill has went into a wonderful piece of art”.

Oh I totally appreciate the time and skill – sincerely. These are, indeed, ‘virtuoso’ tattoos and tattooers. (As I said they are the “Steve Vais” of tattooing…. of their era but sounds like shite years later.)

But despite JBird’s comments – all tatts still look good after 4 years, youngster, give it 20 years and then see what it looks like – these tattoos don’t date or age well.

I’m old enough to remember when a lot of this stuff took off in the late 80s, early 90s, led by Aitchison and (the original) Bugsy. And I’ve seen what tattoos without solid outlines look like 20 years later – massive blobs of faded color. If that’s your thing – go for it.

Gimme Malcolm Young tattoos (and tattooers) any day.

    ;P
