Sidekick Day: What’s his name?

This sidekick is so irrelevant that I don’t even know his name. (I didn’t bother to Google it, either.) I just remember Sonic flying through the levels, and his sidekick chasing him. Did he serve any other purpose?

While everyone clearly knew Mario was the main dude – at least people knew who Luigi was.
