Jessie Smith and the broken wrist

The idea of being injured and having it completely disrupt a person’s life is pretty scary. Not being able to drive, cook dinner, or type would be a huge inconvenience. As a tattoo artist, I couldn’t imagine the fear of a broken hand, wrist, or arm. Even a simple sprain would be chaotic and flip your world upside down. Unfortunately, Jessie Smith is in exactly that position.

Read the letter that Jessie recently sent out:

Dear Friends, Family, and Faithful Creatives,

Last Friday I messed up my drawing hand pretty bad playing soccer and unfortunately it has put me in a position where I can’t tattoo. So I was trying to figure out a way to supplement my tattoo income and I came up with an idea. I had always wanted to see what would happen if I drew up something left handed and thought this was a good opportunity to try. I sat down with the intention to draw a T-Shirt design to sell to people who were interested in giving me a hand financially and to my surprise it turned out better then I had expected.

I ended up sketching a squirrel (go figure:) named Basher who was the sole survivor in the battle for the Golden Acorn. I also wrote a short story about how he ended up breaking his wrist that can be found behind the image on the T-shirt. If you are interested in scooping up a T-Shirt click here. All shirts will be printed on American Apparel and run $23 a piece. They are available in Men’s (Grey or Sepia) and Girl’s (Grey or Muave). Thank you all so much for your continued support,

Jesse Smith

CNN reports: tattoos equal TROUBLE!

Forget the Conan O’Brien vs. Jay Leno debacle; when did CNN start sounding like Fox News?

I can’t even be outraged by this, though obviously some people will be. Surely CNN can’t be taking themselves seriously when reporting about stuff like this. Taken with a grain of salt and an appreciation for the absurd, this clearly vies for best tattoo-related news report of a new decade.

Reverse psychology in advertising

Rhett & Link are a North Carolina comedy duo that happen to enjoy making funny commercials for local businesses in their spare time, free of charge. It was only a matter of time until a tattoo shop expressed wound up nominated. This is what they came up with for True Blue Tattoo in Austin, TX.

Happy Birthday Sailor Jerry

Sailor JerryIf Sailor Jerry were still alive, today would be his 99th birthday. If you haven’t seen Hori Smoku, you’re missing out. Order it tonight to help celebrate Old Ironside’s birthday.

Below is a clip of Phildelphia Eddie out-take from the Hori Smoku movie. Yes, I’ve posted this before – but it’s still awesome.

“That fuckin’ Sailor Jerry…”

iPhone App: The List

David Allen released some screen shots of his iPhone app, The List. We don’t have all of the details yet, but it looks promising.

The future of the iPhone app in the tattoo world should get interesting in 2010. Between this and the Hell City iPhone app, it looks like some actual entertaining and useful applications are coming out.

Prick Magazine: December 2009

Prick Magazine December 2009

The December of Prick Magazine is out on the streets, and mine arrived at my house this past weekend.

Kristen Leanne graces the cover this month, with a full interview and a barrage of pictures. The issue also includes the reoccurring Artist of the Month featuring Nate Esteras, coverage from the Tattoofest in Kraków (Poland), and a short interview with skate legend Bill Danforth.

As always, the magazine is free, but finding it can be slightly difficult depending on your location. If you can’t find it, the entire issue can be viewed online, or you can sign up for a yearly subscription.

Apprentice wanted

All or Nothing Tattoo in Atlanta is currently seeking an apprentice. If you’re interested, drop them an e-mail for additional details.

Between the rockstar client list and the steady rotation of top notch tattoo artists, an eager apprentice could easily make things happen at a place like All or Nothing.

Hyperspace upgrade

The online Hyperspace Studios, home of Guy Aitchison and Michele Wortman, has recently received a major face lift. Along with the main site, the online store has completely been revamped to include all of the books, educational material, prints, and clothing available from Guy and Michele. In addition, the online store now has a 24 hour call center (1-877-879-5431) to take orders and provide customer service.

The Hyperspace website has enough content to keep your attention for hours and hours. Personally my favorite is the scratch art, but the tattoo work is ok too – if you’re into that sort of thing.
