Gnarmageddon Tour 2012: Dave Barton & Carson Hill

Been dreaming of the day when you could get tattooed by Dave Barton and/or Carson Hill? Looks like 2012 is your year, because starting February 6 they’re going on the road for Gnarmageddon 2012.
Keep track of the cities they’ll be hitting as they come in via  www.GnarmageddonTour.com. And for those of you too lazy to check a standalone URL, they have Twitter and Facebook pages, too. :]

Pushing texture, technique, and saturation to the limits

Below is an excerpt from an e-mail we recently received from one of our faithful readers. We always love reading your thoughts and suggestions, especially when they’re as thought-provoking as this is:

“I have noticed a theme in some of the subject matter you post about. Most of the stuff you post is top shelf solid work, but in my very humble opinion, the absolute best tattoo artists in the world are pushing the limits of subject matter into realistic textures and lighting techniques. I think most (if not all) of the artists above are pushing texture, technique, and saturation to the limits. Even if you don’t love the subject matter, the ability of these people is very next-level. A lot of people ignore an artist who has a bio-organic/mech style because they don’t personally have any interest in that style of tattoo, but imho they are missing out on the most talented artists in the business. End Rant. Love the blog. Thanks for doing it!” -Nick

Construction of color

I had the pleasure of watching Carson Hill tattoo live this past weekend. It’s an interesting process how he layers his color, and goes about obtaining the depth and texture of pieces like these.

Two-day collaboration back piece

While digging back through my inbox, I found these photos Mary sent us of the two days she spent at Hyperspace Studios last spring with one sweet purpose: a full back piece collaboration from Carson Hill and Guy Aitchison.

While it was obviously a very long (and painful) couple of days, the results are clearly worth it. What an amazing way to blow through countless hours of tattooing!

An all star collaboration

Nate Siggard dropped us a line about his unbelievable foot tattoo collaboration featuring Guy Aitchison, Carson Hill, Ty Mc Ewen, and Dan Plumley.

Nate explains how this collaboration came about, and details the experience here. Nate also includes a couple casual snap shots of each artist taking “his turn.”

#Follow Friday – Tattoo Artists

Instead of posting a list of people you should follow today, I’m going to go out on a limb and do something different for this post. Below is a list of tattoo artists that have Twitter accounts, but don’t use them.

Consider this my wish list. All of these artists took the step to make an account – now let’s just hope they start tweeting.

Mike Devries – The occasional tweet does come out from Mike, but it’s typically a plug and they don’t happen all that often.

Carson Hill – Carson was tweeting on a semi irregular basis, but he hasn’t since the end of November.

Joshua Carlton – Without a single tweet, I’m cautiously optimistic that we’ll see this account start up. I’d love to see what Joshua is up to from day to day.

Paul Booth – The man, the myth, the legend. While Paul doesn’t have one tweet yet, there was a “test” tweet yesterday. I’m taking that as a sign of hope that this account will start tweeting soon.

So why follow them? Well, as I said, I’m cautiously optimistic.

As always, I’ve added all of these users to the appropriate lists. Currently we have lists for Tattoo Artists, Tattoo Shops, Photographers, and Clothing Companies.
