The last year has seen a pushback within the tattoo community; with tattoo artists uploading their own tattoo videos to the internet as an antidote to cable network programmed tattoo “reality shows” that are anything but real.

But you know the old saying- “there’s nothing new under the sun”. Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s a number of tattooists took the bull by the horns and produced their own tattoo films. Royboy, Crazy Ace, tattoo fan Michael O. Stearns- folks who documented tattooing for a niche market of worldwide devotees who at the time had no outlet for tattoo programming.

I’ve been collecting these tapes (have you held a VHS tape lately? They’re comically huge) since they originally came out and, fearing that these glimpses of our history may end up forgotten, digitizing them for my ‘Occult Vibrations’ blog. The idea is that if folks all over the world have access to them, they can never disappear.

Instead of talking about the specific tape (dude… you should see the outtakes. Debra dancing butt naked in a snow cemetery, rolling around naked with tigers and a baby… so fucking weird) I figured a little blurb about where the video came from would be more fitting.

I was excited when I saw that Guy Aitchison posted a detailed post on Tattoo Education about a recent lasered bio coverup sleeve he just finished. Guy’s blog isn’t going to tell you whether or not you should laser your tattoo, but it’ll help you realize what’s possible. The subject of lasering is a weird subject, and it’s sometimes difficult to realize what’s possible.

If anyone has any experiences with lasering, coverups, or a combination of the two – please reach out to us. We would really like to dive into this topic more in the near future.

Usually I’m apprehensive of posting videos because I know most people can’t watch them midday. With that being said, today is a holiday so I think it’s safe for everyone to hit play.

By the way, I can’t believe that Guy and Juan got all of this done in nine hours…

Back in July, we posted this bird back piece tattoo by Guy Aitchison. I said I wanted to know more about what had been covered. Is it just me, or does Guy do a really good job of photographing the progress of large-scale tattoos?

It’s been a minute since we posted a good collaboration tattoo (though we’ve tried to make sure they get plenty of face time) around here. This Buddha sleeve collab from Litos and Guy Aitchison leans more to the realistic side than the traditional Americana and Oriental-styled  multi-artist work we put upt las.

I typically don’t post many industry related topics, but this video is too funny. This corny infomercial for Guy Aitchison’s Tattoo Education made it’s way around Facebook earlier this week, but if you haven’t seen it – check it out below.

I have yet to find a photo of whatever tattoo was on this girl’s back before Guy Aitchison covered it & I’m curious as to what was there before. Actually, I take that back–it’s irrelevant now that she has this gorgeous full back piece from Guy to show off.

On June 7, 2010, tattoo artist Guy AItchison applied a pair of engagement/wedding tattoos on the fingers of standup political comedian Jamie Kilstein and his partner, writer Allison Kilkenny. The two of them have a weekly online radio show on Citizen Radio. This 6 minute video is a chronicle of their unconventional ceremony.

While digging back through my inbox, I found these photos Mary sent us of the two days she spent at Hyperspace Studios last spring with one sweet purpose: a full back piece collaboration from Carson Hill and Guy Aitchison.

While it was obviously a very long (and painful) couple of days, the results are clearly worth it. What an amazing way to blow through countless hours of tattooing!
