Quick and Painful Wrap Up

Three of the four Quick and Painful exhibits might have come and gone, but the exhibit is still being talked about. Pictures from Chicago, Los Angeles, and New Haven are starting to appear online. Additionally, the show in Miami takes place in the beginning of December. Lastly, all of the flash sets created for for the show is currently available online at The Hope Shop.

To learn more about the Quick and Painful exhibit, check out our original post back in August.

Tattoo Manor, the newest reality show

I’ve heard rumors about a tattoo reality show similar to this for a couple months, and this is the first official video I’ve seen from it. Yes, I know… another tattoo reality television show. Before you roll your eyes though – you should know the three artists involved are Roman AbregoDee Dee Seruga, and Jessie Smith.

The show isn’t filming yet, as they’re stil fund raising to shoot the first pilot. They’re trying to raise $50,000, and they want you to donate. Here’s their sales pitch:

Our goal is to shoot a full episode. It will be a lot easier to sell our concept to a network when we can show the full cast living and creating in Tattoo Manor. Miami Ink was the most successful reality show of its kind. Allthough it was watched around the world by millions of viewers, it was missing one important factor. It did not gain the respect of the ” tattoo industry .” We have gathered 10 of the most well respected artists in the industry today. With that X-Factor, we have the a sure fire recipe for success.

Before I pass judgement, I want to hear more. I don’t think Roman, Dee Dee, or Jessie would commit themselves to a show they didn’t believe would benefit the industry. I’m also interested in hearing whom the other seven artists will be.

I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on this. Do you think this could be an improvement over New York Ink? Would you rather watch this or Best Ink? Do we need to go in a complete opposite direction and go towards something like Classy Ink? Obviously the tattoo reality shows are going to continue to be pitched, but do you really think one could ever be successful?

Parasitic wasps

There’s no reason to offer my commentary when Jesse Smith gives me all the background needed for you to know he’s done another damn cool tattoo. I will say you should click the image for the full size–the detail is killer.

While sifting through my waiting list I stumbled across this idea and got really excited. Ryan had submitted a number of ideas, all of which were super interesting. He wanted to create a tattoo that revolved around the concept of how other forms of nature reflect human nature. This particular piece illustrates a naturally occurring event between a caterpillar and parasitic wasp larvae. The mother wasp will lay her eggs on the back of a caterpillar so that they will have something to eat when they hatch. After they have completely devoured the caterpillar they use their newborn strength to fly away and conquer the world. It’s a rather morbid occurrence, but what makes it even more depressing is that people do it all the time. Read more about this particular occurrence here.

Gwong the Squirrel Catcher

It seems like every time I see new work from Jessie Smith, it’s a ridiculously massive piece.

Seriously, I’m not exaggerating. Look at his portfolio – it’s monster piece after monster piece.

Exclusive: Pint Sized Paintings Interview

The Pint Size Painting canvas was the talk of the tattoo convention in Detroit on Sunday. As the 2″x3″ canvases were being handed out, some artists gazed at the tiny canvas in amazement, as others didn’t hesitate to get their masterpiece started.

The following week I was fortunate enough to see the paintings in person, and I was blown away. Just when I thought I found my favorite one, it was quickly replaced by another moments later. The amount of detail and time put into these paintings was indescribable.

As we sat around talking about the different paintings, I was able to ask Durb and Tony some questions about the project and their future plans. Read below for the exclusive interview.

Tattoo Snob: What exactly is a ‘pint sized painting’?

Pint Sized Paintings: A Pint Size Painting is a unique miniature masterpiece, art done on a very small scale. All the paintings are on a 2”x3” canvas board, and each one has a huge visual impact.

TS: How many of the paintings were handed out?

PSP: So far we have shipped out almost 1000 canvasses, and received more than 400 back.

TS: With that many handed out, I’m sure you won’t be able to recite everyone that participated. Is there an official list online?

PSP: Yes, you can go to our website, PintSizePaintings.com, and see the list of artists who have submitted art work.

TS: Will we be able to see them live in person?

PSP: We will debut the entire Pint Size Collection at the Hell City Tattoo Festival, May 21-23 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Killumbus. Following that, the show will go to Sacred Gallery NYC in July. From there we will display it at Hell City Phoenix at the Biltmore, August 27-29. Then it will travel to Coil Tattoo Gallery in L.A.

TS: All of the paintings are going to be featured in a book, right?

PSP: Not all paintings received are printed in this first book from Pint Size Publishing. The book is a 224-page hardcover collection of these miniature masterpieces, with 208 of the paintings displayed in full color and printed to actual size.

TS: Will the book’s pages be 2″x3″ as well?

PSP: The book is 6”x9” landscape, and there are two paintings per page to give the focus to the amazing artwork. The book is printed in an art gallery format with bright, white pages and a very clean and simple view so as to not take away from the small paintings.

TS: Where can people pick the book up at?

PSP: You can of course pre-order the book from Pint Size Publishing on our website, Hellcity.com, and they will be available with a limited edition ruler/magnifying glass at Hell City Killumbus, available with the first 200 books purchased.

TS: I hear you’re already working on volume two? Is this true?

PSP: It is true, with the amount of Pint Size Packages we have already sent out, each submission received now is for Volume 2. Submissions pour in on a daily basis. There are hundreds of artists who have not yet sent in their Pint Size Paintings, and more want to be involved every day. Numerous artists have heard of this project heard through the grapevine, plus with the excitement for the release of Volume 1, Pint Size Paintings will most likely have quite a number of editions.

TS: If an artist is interested in being a part of volume two, who can they contact?

PSP: They can simply send us their mailing address to info@hellcity.com and let us know they want to be a part of Pint Size Paintings. We will ship them out a Pint Size Package containing two of our boards (required to use) and a release form, along with some promotional material. We encourage artists from all genres to participate, not just tattoo artists. Spread the word!

Jessie Smith and the broken wrist

The idea of being injured and having it completely disrupt a person’s life is pretty scary. Not being able to drive, cook dinner, or type would be a huge inconvenience. As a tattoo artist, I couldn’t imagine the fear of a broken hand, wrist, or arm. Even a simple sprain would be chaotic and flip your world upside down. Unfortunately, Jessie Smith is in exactly that position.

Read the letter that Jessie recently sent out:

Dear Friends, Family, and Faithful Creatives,

Last Friday I messed up my drawing hand pretty bad playing soccer and unfortunately it has put me in a position where I can’t tattoo. So I was trying to figure out a way to supplement my tattoo income and I came up with an idea. I had always wanted to see what would happen if I drew up something left handed and thought this was a good opportunity to try. I sat down with the intention to draw a T-Shirt design to sell to people who were interested in giving me a hand financially and to my surprise it turned out better then I had expected.

I ended up sketching a squirrel (go figure:) named Basher who was the sole survivor in the battle for the Golden Acorn. I also wrote a short story about how he ended up breaking his wrist that can be found behind the image on the T-shirt. If you are interested in scooping up a T-Shirt click here. All shirts will be printed on American Apparel and run $23 a piece. They are available in Men’s (Grey or Sepia) and Girl’s (Grey or Muave). Thank you all so much for your continued support,

Jesse Smith
