Shamanic Skin: photography by Lars Krutak

Looking for a good way to start your evening on Saturday, February 4th? Head down to Sacred Gallery from 7-10pm for the NYC debut of “Shamanic Skin: The Art of Magical Tattooing.” The exhibition features thirty selected works from the portfolio of tattoo anthropologist Dr. Lars Krutak. The event is free and all are invited.

From the artist statement:

For the past fifteen years, Dr. Lars Krutak has travelled the globe to document the religious beliefs behind permanent forms of tribal body modification. His photographic exhibition focuses upon the deeply spiritual realm of tattoo through an examination of these fascinating rituals.

Don’t worry if you miss the opening night, as the entire exhibition will be available for viewing February 4th-29th from noon to 8pm daily. Further details about the exhibition can be found on the Facebook event page.

A mermaid in 2012

Mermaid seem to fall into that category of generic tattoos, but I think it would be a different story if more mermaids looked like this.

Single flapper

Continuous line drawing is not an artistic style you see reflected in tattoos very often, but I think it was quite well-applied in this instance.

Life and death

Someone told me recently there was “no reason” to post work from Thomas Hooper because, and I quote: “everyone’s already seen it.”

I think I speak for anyone who doesn’t get their dick outta joint due to jealousy when I say there are many reasons to post Hooper’s new work, and that I’m going to keep doing so until the cows come home. (Or the internet explode, whichever comes first.)

Kings and Ravens

It’s amazing to consider how much diversity there is within the realms of tattooing; when I think of the black and gray tattoos I would see in tattoo magazines I picked up in the bookstore more than 10 years ago in comparison to pieces like the one below… well, it’s good to know old art can still learn new tricks.

Love the Love

See that clever title? It’s actually correct grammar since I’m making reference to Ashley Love, the person, and not love, the emotion.

I’m willing to bet I screwed that last sentence up. Please be gentle grammar nazis.
