Video: Behind the Needle 2

The videos from Papercut Pictures keep on coming. The first video was from the London Tattoo Convention, while the second one went behind the scenes and into the minds of the artists. This third one dives into the minds of four specific artists, and talks about a variety of aspects in their personal and professional lives.

Behind the Needle 2 features four more of our favourites: Ryan Mason (Scapegoat Tattoo, Portland), Jo Harrison (Modern Body Art, Birmingham), Steve Vinall (The Family Business, London) and Brian Thomas Wilson (Scapegoat Tattoo, Portland).

Ryan tells us how he needed to find something to do with his life, that wasn’t a shitty job after dropping out of art school, and what’s it’s like tattooing in Portland.

Jo talks about punks, rockers and what it’s like being in the tattoo world as a woman. She was actually pregnant at the time of filming and has since given birth to a beautiful baby girl called Marley.

Since Steve has been able to hold a pencil all he has really done is draw, he sees tattooing as one of the strongest and most permanent ways to put your imagery into the world.

Brian tells us how he got lucky by being offered an apprenticeship and was ‘pretty bad’ for a long time. Now he loves the symbolism of fairy tales in his tattoos. He works with Ryan at Scapegoat, and as you can see from the film, they really love each other, ahh.

Don’t forget all of these videos are courtesy of Zeitgeist Magazine.

Signifying Nothing

This post is dedicated to everyone who asks the same boring question…

Animal experimentation

I don’t think there’s anything I could possibly say about the subject matter of this tattoo that it doesn’t say for itself. So I’ll just say, “wow” and leave you to discuss tattoos making statements of this magnitude among yourselves.

Or you could always send me more, if you’ve seen any good ones lately.

Featured Artist: Ryan Mason

Based out of Portland, Ryan Mason is surely an artist not to missed by anyone capable of finding themselves in his neck of the woods. The response he has received online to his unique style of tattooing is astonishing, much like his practice of booking no more than two months out. With less than 10 years in the industry under his belt, his level of skill can only be attributed to natural talent, despite his frequent protests that he’s “not an artist”.

TattooSnob on SuicideGirls.com: Ryan Mason

When we asked whom you would like to see interviewed in the future, Ryan Mason happened to be mentioned at least 12 times. On this glorious Wednesday, the TattooSnob interview with Ryan is now live on Suicide Girls.

Ryan spoke with us about how he wound up being a tattoo artist in Portland, his views on tattooing vs. artistry, and why he doesn’t want to do your cat’s portrait.

Pussy Day: Letting the cat out of the bag

Going to let the cat out of the bag… I’m really stoked on the interview we’ll be posting shortly from Ryan Mason.

Look at the feets!

True or false: you also would like one of these to put on your wall? Personally I can’t take my eyes off the dangling feet/tail/clock pieces at the bottom. I mean seriously, have you ever looked at raccoon feet?

Teddy

Everyone has a raggedy old stuffed animal sitting high up on a shelf in the back of their closet somewhere. Looks like this teddy hold a pretty special place in someone’s heart… and now on their arm, as well.
